Hiba Irmak Kir is a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at American University. Her research interests include refugee studies, state anthropology, and religious institutions. Her master’s thesis examined the role of Syrian NGOs in Istanbul as emerging political actors, analyzing their strategies for navigating and responding to state policies. Her current research explores how Syrian refugees in Turkey encounter the state within mosques, framing these religious spaces as state-mediated arenas where governance and community building intersect. This work investigates the dual role of mosques as sites for both spiritual practices and state interactions, offering a nuanced perspective on the interplay between religion and state authority.
