Title: Communications & Fundraising Assistant
Accountable to: Partnerships & Communications Manager
Job purpose: To support the Partnerships and Communications Manager in fundraising/donor relations, events management, and communications.
We are looking for a highly motivated person with excellent writing and organizational skills and a keen interest in education, research and human rights in Africa.
The intern will work primarily with the Partnerships and Communications Manager. S/he will provide general communications support including helping to organize events, raising our public profile through our website/social media, drafting communications and fundraising pieces and coordinating data and correspondence related to fundraising and communications.
This is an exciting time for the Trust as we grow as an organization and develop a range of new communications strategies and initiatives. In the first half of 2015 we expect the focus areas of the communications team to be on organizing our annual conference for scholars and civil society activists in South Africa, publishing a new series of booklets focused on key education and human rights issues in southern Africa, launching our new website, and drafting and submitting corporate fundraising
Specific Responsibilities:
Communications & Publicity
Research and prepare publicity materials such as case studies, interviews, leaflets, posters andweb content
Assist in the co‐ordination of our national network of volunteer Student Representatives who raise funds and publicity at UK universities
Maintain and grow our social media presence
Fundraising and Donor Relations
Research into UK, SA and US funding prospects for human rights and education programmes
and draft proposals (focus on corporate foundations)
Maintain correspondence with individual donors including mailing and filing
Assist with publicity and support to our London Marathon 2015 team
Assist with our growing online fundraising activities
Events
Assist with organizing events in the UK and South Africa focusing on human rights, education
and social justice—particularly logistical arrangements, managing invitation lists and RSVPs
In addition to the tasks outlined above, the Intern will be required to assist with ad hoc administrative
duties as required by the Partnerships & Communications Manager, as well as such other tasks as the
Senior Management Team may reasonably ask.
Person Specification:
Essential
Interest in and general knowledge of development and human rights issues in southern Africa
Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
Experience in two or more of the following: fundraising, communications or journalism, event management
Experience with and passion for social media
Strong organisational/administrative skills and attention to detail
Excellent writing, research and proofreading skills
Desirable
Specialised knowledge of/experience in education and human rights in southern Africa
Interest in/experience of the role of research in development interventions in southern Africa
Experience with data entry and management
Experience writing funding proposals and/or publicity materials
Design skills (InDesign, Photoshop, websites)
Background in student activism/campaigning
Remuneration: £13 000 per annum, pro rata.
