Former South African Constitutional Court Justice and Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into Inefficiencies in Policing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town Justice Kate O’Regan will be giving a seminar on the role of police in poor communities. Drawing on her experience in Khayelitsha, she will be asking some foundational questions in developing a positive relationship between the police and the members of the community:

  • What is the mandate of the police?
  • What are the systemic issues which make policing poor communities especially challenging?
  • How do we hold the police accountable?
  • What is the role of the community and civic activists in promoting safe communities?
