Policing poor communities: what are the questions we should be asking?-Justice Kate O'Regan (Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into Inefficiencies in Policing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town)

Former South African Constitutional Court Justice and Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into Inefficiencies in Policing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town Justice Kate O’Regan will be giving a seminar on the role of police in poor communities. Drawing on her experience in Khayelitsha, she will be asking some foundational questions in developing a positive relationship between the police and the members of the community:

  • What is the mandate of the police?
  • What are the systemic issues which make policing poor communities especially challenging?
  • How do we hold the police accountable?
  • What is the role of the community and civic activists in promoting safe communities?
