THE CENTRE FOR CHILD LAW AND OXFORD HUMAN RIGHTS HUB URGE THE SUPREME COURT OF APPEAL TO PUT CHILDREN FIRST IN LANDMARK CLASS ACTION CASE ABOUT LEAD POISONING

by | Nov 5, 2025

The Centre for Child Law (CCL), together with legal scholars from the Oxford Human Rights Hub (“the Amici”), will appear before the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein as amicus curiae in the matter of Various Parties obo Minors and Another v Anglo American South Africa (Pty) Ltd on 3 and 4 November 2025. This historic case seeks justice for thousands of children and mothers in Kabwe, Zambia, one of the world’s most lead-polluted towns who continue to suffer the lifelong effects of lead poisoning caused by years of mining operations.

The Amici’s message to the Court is clear: children’s rights must come first. Procedures should not be so burdensome that they lock children out of the justice system especially when their health, futures, and lives are at stake.
