The Berkeley Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law Study Group, hosted by the Department of Law, Juridicum, at the Stockholm University, will hold its 2019 meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, on 17–18 June 2019.

Proposals are now being sought for workshop presentations. Papers on any topic relevant to equality and anti-discrimination law are welcome, and the committee proposes the following themes:

  • Twenty-five years with the Paris principles and National Human Rights Institutions

We anticipate inviting up to 60 scholars, lawyers and policy-makers to join us for two days of workshops, presentations and discussions.

Presentation proposals of 500 to 1000 words, or applications to participate as a discussant/panel chair, should be submitted no later than 1 October 2018. We encourage applicants to attach a brief CV to the proposal or application. If you wish to apply for a travel subsidy to attend the conference, please indicate this on your proposal, and provide a short (100 word) explanation of why you require the subsidy.

  • Decisions will be announced by the beginning of December 2018.
  • Papers and/or presentation materials should be ready for circulation to all participants no later than 11 May 2019.
  • Proposals for presentations and/or papers will be reviewed by Professor Laura Carlson, Stockholm University Department of Law and Professor David Oppenheimer, Berkeley Law.

Please send inquiries and presentation and/or paper proposals or applications to participate as a respondent to doppenheimer@law.berkeley.edu

Logistical Information

Travel: All participants will need to pay for their own travel to Stockholm and to the hotel. The hotel is above the Stockholm central station so there are trains and buses going directly from the airport to the station. Limited subsidies to facilitate attendance at the conference are available for early career scholars, those without institutional funding and those from developing countries (with thanks to the Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law at Berkeley Law).

Lodging: Hotel rooms for the nights of 16-17 June are being generously funded by the Swedish foundation, Justitierådet Edvard Cassels stiftelsen at the Department of Law, at First Hotel Kungsbron, Västra Järnvägsgatan 17,

111 64 Stockholm, Tel: +46 (0) 8-6542800,

Additional nights are available at a discounted group rate (group Berkeley/Stockholm Anti-Discrimination Law Conference, rate SEK 1195) to be arranged and paid for by the participants. The hotel is in the center of Stockholm, with most sites within easy walking distance.

Meals: Those arriving on Sunday are invited to a dinner funded by the Foundation, location to be decided. Breakfasts Monday and Tuesday are included with the hotel room. Lunches on Monday and Tuesday, as well as dinner on Monday, will all be at the Stockholm University campus and provided as part of the conference. Those arriving early are invited to a walking tour Sunday, 16 June, of the Old Town (Gamla Stan, visitsweden.com/stockholm-old-town) and a museum visit to the Vasa ship (www.vasamuseet.se). More details will be sent out later.

Conference location: The conference will be held at Stockholm University. There is a direct subway line from the central station to the university (red line/Mörby center, stops centralen to universitet, about 15 minutes). Subway tickets will be provided at the hotel before going to the university.

Stockholm University Department of Law is located on the outskirts of Stockholm City in the Royal National City Part on the island of Djurgård (www.su.se/english/about/campus).
